G: I agree that countries are perfectly entitled to choose some immigrants according to their needs (e.g. computer experts, construction workers, etc). After all, the US do that, Canada does that.

However, there is a clear distinction between labour immigration and asylum. As far as labour immigration is concerned, language/education/work experience criteria seem quite normal. But I think it's the responsibility of wealthy countries to accept a reasonable number of asylum seekers (proper refugees in particular). Especially those with a particular responsibility towards certain countries (former colonial powers for instance; Or the US with South Vietnam at the time).

The problem is that quite often, people who come from very poor countries but do not face persecution back home try to apply for asylum on dubious grounds. That makes things more complicated. It would be better if they could apply for a visa for work purposes. After all, it's not just super qualified scientists that developed countries need.

Anyway, I guess my answer is yes, countries are allowed to choose who enters, subject to letting in a reasonable numbers of asylum seekers / refugees facing persecution at home / coming from war zones.

Thanks Reporter for the wonderful photos you presented to us. The size of a single serve of fast food & drink there is very big. I would carry a kithcen knife and a cup with me next time when I am in US, that should I have some quick meal, I would cut it into 2 half's, and drink into 2 cups. Looking forward to the Tea Ceremony's photos, Wedding photos and Reception photos. So the wedding is done over 3 ceremonies over 3 days. Have fun and blessing to the bride and groom. 3 cheers

Ah yeah, just a Friday night in Paris - showing a bit of Melbourne weather (in the four-seasons-in-a-day-sense) but regardless the plan is to join thousands of others in the Friday night Pari Roller three hour skate around the city! A fine way to see it all one final time... well, until I come back in a few months... Final farewells from Paris to you too, Al, et bisous!

Speaking of reading, you're magazines are still in the back of my car. And I do work, I'm up before 5am every morning, I may not be in the best of shape while I'm at work but hey, I'm there I guess.

Hey Linna!

Thanks for your message, I hope you're well. Yeah, I guess my life is ok, the only problem is that it seems rather dull when I stay in Melbourne for an extended period of time... I've been back since September last year now and I'm starting to get really bored, I feel like all I'm doing is working, working and fantasising about being somewhere else... I've got plenty to do and all but it's not half as exciting! sigh...

Anyways, great to hear from you and keep in touch!

It's Linna (Lissa's sister). Remember me? how are you btw. Anyway, I logged on to the CYSM forum (haven't logged on in AGES) and I was looking at all the new and old members in member list and i found you! And you had a website so i thought i'd check it out and it's soo good. Its nice and very user-friendly. Was looking at your cool travel photos. OMG, you make my life look sooooooooooo dull!!! *looks sad* I'm just sitting my arse here at work doing some travel agent things... and here surfing ur website crying that you have such a wonderful life. I really do envy you. Very very much!!! You also teach music. So skilled, what are you not good at?!! TELL ME!! I really really worship you m(_ _)m I'm really starting to look up to you now and i really think you've inspired a lot of people out there to go out there and see the world for themselves. Keep up dating your adventures! *starts crying..* I wanna go to France now.. *sulks like a baby*..

We should catch up some times so we can swap lives!!

Looking forward to seeing you Sunday night at PJ's. I have been told you are coming, so I hope it wasn't some sort of surprise. Anyway...I'm sure we will rock out just for you.

You're stories and photos have been a very informative travel guide. I only hope you can continue these entries based around your travels and culinary experiences in the western suburbs.

Hi Alan,

Feeling like your 8th birthday at Disneyland! How Wonderful!

Thank you for your very very colourful record of your experience at Hong Kong Disneyland. You are a very good marketer. I think I am sold with the idea of going to Disneyland with Honhon now. Imaging him at Disney. He might say Honhon want to love here. Oh, by the way, He has been to Jungle playground at the end of the othere side of Hampshire Rd. He like everything he tried, even the giant slide. He's so happy & enjoying himself there.

cheers

Can't believe we missed each other! I kept meaning to read your posts but have only just caught up on it all. Looks and sounds amazing, again.

I got back to Melbourne mid-May, and now I leave again in the beginning of August. Dropping everything to move to the northern hemisphere and be an artist! Don't know when I'll be back again...

It's fun being international, right? Ha ha. Enjoy/look after yourself

G'day Al. I can't believe your time's almost up! It seems like just the other day that we [insert recent unforgettable Toad's moment memory here].
Melbourne is vibrant with Comm Games fever right now. We went and watched the fireworks from the riverbanks - very spectacular - you would have loved it. They had huge bursts all along the river and all at once, plus massive displays also coming from the tops of the taller buildings at the east end of the city. Masses of people everywhere. Lots of good music going on. A great time to get out and do stuff.
I've been busy lately so had to do a bit of catching up with your entries. I'm all good now - consider me updated. Great stuff by the way - a lesser man would have lost the motivation by now!
Hope to see you soon,

Yes, Alan,

'simple and familiar things can make us happy after being...' I agreed.
Yesterday morning around 6.45am, Ann and I took Marcus to the backyard garden, we look up and see the sky is so glorious beautiful: clear blue sky is the background, and just a couple of golden lining there, it's so assuring that God is there and this is free for all of us to enjoy. We show it to Marcus as well. And all the little flowers are blooming and waving in the wind on the front yard, the smell of roses, magnolia and those floers called 'gold & silver' flower are so wonderful when I get close to them every time when I'm in the garden. I'm so thankful on these simple things now.

cheers

Congrad on taking up this 2nd contract. These ports/countires are full of history and cultural heritage. Some have very very old civilisation as well. You might need to read up on these countires while you can on board the ship's library. I believe you will enjoy the next one even more. See you in 30 days time.

PS you might need to edit your Web title to 'onboard Pacific Princess' later

Hey Al,

Just been sitting in front of the computer here, updating Cong Cong on your recent shenanigans. He had a good chuckle about your drinking, Valentine\'s gift, toasted-sandwich maker purchase, and impending move to a quieter room. (Awaay from the anchor.)

Here are some of his comments along the way (we went as far back as the CNY entries): downtown Papeete buildings reflect a more north-Asian than European style, with the lattice and open balconies; good friends are about being comfortable together (not really doing his Cantonese expression justice here); you can ask the ship captain for motion-sickness pills; the blue tone of your photos reflects a non-Kodachrome film - looks more like AGFA stock; you can see how the earth is curved from your pictures of the horizon.

He has also solved your ABC picture puzzle - \'A\' stands for \'animal.\' To which I say \'B\' for \'brilliant.\'

Take care bro!
Ann

p.s. Marcus\'s parcel arrived today, he\'ll pick it up tomorrow most like.

Hey Alan I'm still reading your entries in your diary and watching the pictures, still liking every single one of them. Your writing also seems to be getting better as time goes by, but that's probably due to the fact you'r writing them on your notebook and transfering them onto the internet PC there.

Anyway, hope you're still enjoying your time on the ship and that the music you play is interesting and challenging.

Oh, and any luck with the birds? I always imagined these cruised to be waaaay out of control!

Hey Al,

Chinese New Year reminded me that I had not looked in here since the first entry... Then I read it all at once... Nice work, very entertaining and informative. For example, I had no idea you were so cricket-obsessed. That talking doll sounds scary too.

So is it only the musos that do three to five hours work a day? Or is that all of the staff? More specifically - how hard does the photographer have to work?

I'll be sure to keep up with your entries from now - enjoy, and may you win your next poker tournament.

Hi Alan,
Happy New Year! Wish you happier healthier and wiser by the day.
Your latest diaries are great & fun to read. I thoroughly enjoy them very much. Especially about the kind of fish you saw, books you read and people you met...Photos you took are very interesting. I like the sunrise one.
Here in Melbourne, on 280106 afternoon (Chinese New Year's Eve) there's a very very heavy rain fall that we haven't seen for a long time. It's a shower of blessing from God. I was doing my last bit of shopping around Footscray at the time. Here's what I heard at one of the groceries store: the store owner said out loudly to all shoppers there, "I has asked Mr Sky (she meant God) to hold it on 'till tonight!! He didn't listen to me. He did the wrong thing again and again...Pouring water at the wrong time. All my vegies and groceries stuff that put out in the open are all getting wet...And when she spotted me there, she then said, "and Dan is here, when I asked him about a loan, he didn't give it to me either..." Everyone in the shop is entertained greatly. It's quite funny the way she expressed herslf. She turned her shop into a live theatre herself.. and people that got to stay inside the shop just bought more things. Apart from a live sea perch that I bought there, I also bought some things that I initially didn't intended to...Then inside another Hot Bread Kitchen, there's another view from the baker there, Hoang the baker looked out to the sky and said,"thank God, it's raining. God answered my prayer" (it's so hot these days working inside the bakery here) And on 290106 New Year's Day, it rained again!!! It's very good for the land and people here.
Cong cong gave Chinese New Year Red Envelop to everyone came to visit us. He gave you one as well. We will keep it for you. Will send you some photos via Yahoo. Cheers,
Love from us all.

One lane. Seems the ship keeps doing the same voyage Al. Fancy that eh! Recently I keep seeing people that look like you, but it's not, and im sad. Ah well, school went back today so I won't be seeing as much people during the day now. It's ok. Have you seen any mother of pearl on your daytime sightseeing escapades?

Hi Alan, How have you been lately? Sea still rough? Muscle Ok now? Play soccer agin OK?
Melbourne has been very very hot the last couple of days: 33 to 41 degrees! Chinese community here has been very busy preparing/shopping for the Lunar New Year (29/01/06 this Sunday) Year of the Dog. ANZ New Year Poster and the Electric fire cracker were up on the wall, same place like last year. Honhon had a fright when we first turned it on. Mum & I went to Little Saigon Bilo Centre yesterday morning, and there were full of people buying things for Family Reunion dinner and for New Year's dinner. This Sunday (New Year's Eve) we will have dinner with the Chu's family at Danny Seafood. JohnChrisMarcus will join us as well. Sunday seafood luncheon at home. Sunday New Year dnner will also be at home: the Chu's & J.C.M. family will be with us. Ann & mum will prepare the dinner. W.A lobsters, Oceania sashimi, crab & fin soup, brucheta bread...red envelops.. However, first thing in the morning, we will go to Chinatown for the celebration: tens of thousand of people will be there... heaps of dragon dance...lion dance... fire cracker.. Congcong & Marcus will love it, (remember the days we were...I think Hon hon will be sitting on someone's shoulders a lot of the time watching lion dance, and it's his birthday too on the day! after all these, then we might be having a light yum cha somewhere in the city before we head home for our real luncheon. Fred will be here 020206. We will have a full table (12) yum cha at Golden Dragon Palace at Lower Templestowe at Manningham Rd on 120206 (this day is the first full moon of the year: 15th day of the first month of Chinese New Year of the Dog) after this day, Chinese New Year celebration cease, all activittes will be back to their normal routine: in the old days, farmers bakc to their farm, children back to school with new clothes & new shoes, shops open for business again...
I think you would see some Chinese New Year celebrations in those islands as well. Please take some photos and write to us what you see there.
Wish you a happy & healthy New Year of the Dog!

Dan

"...like in that movie, 'We Ended Up Having To Eat Each Other.'

Yes, it would, wouldn't it! .... perhaps I need to buy myself a white stick!!"

Sorry there, got distracted. Yo bro,
wishing you a melody-laden new year - every night a song-and-dance extravaganza! Hang on, you've already got that. How about some chickpeas then?

Wrapped in a flurry of farewells at the moment, very nice - keeps the cold out.

Stay regular,
Ann

Yes, Alice & I do enjoy visit your webs everyday. Yes, we're reading. You're so creative in generating new things to do. Hope the library there keeps adding new books for you... Alice saw Marcus watering his aunty Lai Yi's garden religiously. Pouring rice-water on every plant, but some gets more than others...His routine when he's back from school: practise on wheel, then soup & tea, then do some gardening...I have tried to load more photos onto to my webs but it didn't take them anymore. Might be that the limit on it is up?

Cheers & have a good day. Dan

Hi,
